Comparisons between Refereed Journal Newsletter and Magazine

_Refereed Journal
The main purpose of a Refereed journal is to report original research or experimentation and to communicate this information to the rest of the scholarly world. The language of Refereed journals reflects the discipline covered, as it assumes some knowledge or background on the part of the reader. Refereed journals always rigorously cite their sources in the form of footnotes or bibliographies. Many Refereed journals are published by professional organizations.

_Newsletter
A newsletter is a regularly distributed publication generally about one main topic that is of interest to its subscribers. Newspapers and leaflets are types of newsletters.[1] Additionally, newsletters delivered electronically via email (e-Newsletters) have gained rapid acceptance.
Many newsletters are published by clubs, churches, societies, associations, and businesses, especially companies, to provide information of interest to their members, customers or employees. Some newsletters are created as money-making ventures and sold directly to subscribers.
Newsletters can be divided into two distinct types. Printed (on paper) and digital (on the internet). The digital formats vary from the simplest format, text to highly designable formats like pdf and html

_ Magazines
Magazines are publications, generally published on a regular schedule, containing a variety of articles, generally financed by advertising, by a purchase price, by pre-paid magazine subscriptions, or all three. Magazines can be distributed through the mail; through sales by newsstands, bookstores or other vendors; or through free distribution at selected pick up locations.

How to identify a Refereed Journal
Check to see if there is a page listing the Editorial Board.
See what credentials they have.
Check if there is a page containing "instructions for authors", it may actually say the journal is peer reviewed.
Scholarly journals do not usually contain advertisements, except for non-profit events or for other journals by that publisher.
