Illegal immigrant faces ID theft charge
Times-News
November 27, 2007 - 7:12PM
A Haw River man who was charged Monday with stealing the identity of a Burlington man was previously deported to Mexico by federal authorities, officials with the Alamance County Sheriff’s Department said.

Deputies charged Mario Sosa-Cruz, 41, at his Burlington job with using the Social Security number of Daniel Rodezno Brizuela, of Hyde Street, in Burlington.

“This is just another example of the legal community getting victimized by illegals,” said Randy Jones, spokesman for the Alamance County Sheriff’s Department.

According to an Alamance County Sheriff’s press release, Sosa-Cruz told investigators that he bought Brizuela’s name and Social Security number from someone in Siler City. He then used Brizuela’s name, Social Security number and a fraudulent permanent resident number to gain employment at Holt Sublimation, on Air Park Drive, in Burlington.

Meanwhile, Brizuela became suspicious when he learned from the North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles that his license had been revoked for a driving while impaired charge that he had no knowledge about and for which he was not responsible.

It didn’t take authorities long to learn that Sosa-Cruz had not only been posing as Brizuela, but that he was working in Burlington as well.

“The natural course of the investigation led us to Sosa-Cruz,” said Jones.

While employed with his company, Sosa-Cruz, who answered to the name Daniel Brizuela, was charged with driving while impaired and was processed under the name Daniel Brizuela, the release said.

“There could be additional charges on the DWI from the original arresting agency,” said Jones, adding that the original arresting officer will be working with the real Brizuela in order to expunge his record with the DMV.

“Mr. Sosa admitted to using the identify of Daniel Brizuela and that he had entered the
United States illegally somewhere in Arizona,” added the release.

Sosa-Cruz, who was processed though the county’s 287(g) program, is also being investigated by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents for possibly being in the category of an aggravated felon, said Jones.

“Our biggest concern is crime being committed by illegals,” he said.
