Subject: Writing

I teach writing at a two year college; the students range from eighteen to seventy plus in age. In the past, I would have one or two students a year with dyslexia. At the present time I have six students with dyslexia. The recommendation is usually the same for all students, which is give them more time. Teaching for thirty-six years now I know the recommendation is not the best because we all learning differently, regardless of our abilities/disabilities.

I am now in the certificate dyslexia class hoping to understand what dyslexia is and how to help my students with dyslexia learn to write. At this point, I have started having my students with dyslexia do their prewriting, highlight their favorite ideas, then write their favorite ideas on post it notes. They can use the post it notes to build their outline; they can move their notes around to help with organization. Dyslexia students seem to struggle with organization, so I try to minimize the amount of writing by using the notes. I give them oral instructions for each type of organization; it can be time, space, or least/most. They can also write their thesis and conclusion on notes, and then they have an outline ready to be typed. This seems to help with their frustration and build their self-esteem.
