Hi!
I work as an au pair for a well-off family in the greater los angeles area. One night, the parents were out late at a benefit when their daughter got sick.
I called the family doctor's office, who advised me to go to the local er.
After waiting an eternety with a 8 year old with a sore throat we got called back. I sat there, playing big sister. Everything they did with her, procedures, were the same as what they performed on me years ago. the temp in the ear (no rectal thank god), the testing reflexes, the feeling the lymph nodes for swelling. I watched everything, smiling at her, trying to keep her calm.
I hoped what happened next wouldnt. the doctor pulled me aside and asked the question I dreaded as a child, and knew she would dread as well.
"It appears she has strep throat, its pretty bad. Her fever is about 101 or so and her throat is pretty swollen. We would give her pills, but with how swollen her throat is, it would hurt her to swallow them. I can still do that if you'd like, or we can give her a small dose of an antibiotic injection."
I asked him where the injection would go. He gave me an odd look and replied that it would, on a girl of her size, go in her bottom.
I agreed to take the shot and walked into the room. I asked her to lay on her belly before the nurse even entered. she obliged, not really thinking anything was wrong. when I pulled off her pj pants, leaving just her undies she started to panic.
"No shot! NO SHOT!"
the girl was hysterical. By the time the nurse had the syringe ready, i was putting a great deal of weight on her to hold her still enough. I wasnt even about to explain that it was better for her to take the shot than swallow pills with a sore and swollen throat. The nurse asked her assistant to hold the girl's ankles, and I held her arms and torso, trying to get her to calm down.
THe nurse as awesome, she pulled down her undies all the way, and with a quick jab the had the needle in. the thick medication took a bit to inject, but once it was all over she left quitely praising the girl and let us have the room for as long as we needed.
I got glared at for most of the ride home, but a quick stop for icecream and cartoons made her feel better.

I have more stories like this one =)
