Julia Morley, Executive Chairman of Miss World Limited promoters of the Miss World Contest has given strong support to Sara Lawrence, Miss Jamaica World 2006, who recently relinquished her duties as Miss Jamaica World. Mrs. Morley in a letter to Miss Jamaica World Pageant Promoter, Mickey Haughton-James, urged unity in support for Sara and stated that she had no intention of taking away her Miss World Caribbean title.

Julia's letter:

Dear Mickey

I am so sorry you are having a rough time. Seriously I think that Sara is such a brilliant girl, her behavior and promotion of Jamaica was second to none. She is a warm, compassionate, kind, caring girl and I truly believe that we must accept that she has made her statement with grace and truth. It is not for us to in any way condemn her but to give our full blessing and to assist and support her. Since she is pregnant she needs our love and good wishes which she certainly has from all of us here. I have no intention of removing her title. I think we should all stand together on this matter and whilst this obviously is not a normal situation it would be ridiculous not to realize these things do happen and we must realize that in the 21st century it is more likely to happen.

Please give her our best and tell her I would love to have a cuddle with her baby when she has it.

Mr. World is really proving to be a huge success. I will tell you all about it when I have an opportunity, at the moment we are really over worked!

Love

Julia

A Statement in Response to Miss Jamaica Relinquishing her Crown

Sara Lawrence, the reigning Miss Jamaica World, is a fabulous young woman who did Jamaica proud at the 2006 Miss World Contest and has performed outstandingly as Miss Jamaica World since then. Unfortunately, Miss Lawrence has made an error of judgment and is now facing up to the consequences. As is typical of her she is doing so in a forthright manner, with class and in keeping with her moral dictates. There was another way out of the predicament that Sara found herself to be in and many, perhaps most, young women would have chosen that path. The path Sara has taken is a very difficult one. She has won many admirers and supporters, here at home and abroad as well, and they especially, will be disappointed at this turn of events. Sara is well aware of this and I know that it has caused her great anguish.

Sara’s role in all of this cannot be ignored; her actions could potentially harm the tradition that is the Miss Jamaica World Pageant and its past and future winners. I know that Sara intends to do all within her powers to mitigate this potential harm through her future endeavours and Spartan intends to give her 100% support. I hope that all Jamaica will be understanding and do likewise.

Statement from Sara Lawrence

In August 2006, I was honoured to be selected to represent my country as Miss Jamaica World for the year 2006-2007. As I accepted this unique opportunity to serve Jamaica, I promised that I would faithfully seek to embody the spirit of Jamaica and our wonderful people. It was with tremendous pride that I carried the Jamaican flag as high as I could everywhere that I went and promoted our country emphatically to everyone I met. The Miss World competition was an unforgettable experience. As the world watched and voted me Queen of the Caribbean, I felt a wonderfully strong and positive response to us as a people. The months which have followed, have been filled with activities each affording a further opportunity to present our country in the best possible light. Jamaicans everywhere, at home and abroad, have warmed to me and made me feel privileged to be their representative. It is with sincere gratitude and some sadness, therefore, that I issue this statement, knowing that I owe it to Jamaica to let you know why I will be giving up my duties as your Miss Jamaica World before my assigned time in August this year. I relinquish my position as Miss Jamaica World 2006, having taken a deeply personal decision to face up to my responsibilities as one who expects to become a mother later this year. I believe with all that is within me that it is my moral obligation to do what I believe to
1
be ethically correct and follow what I believe in my heart to be right. This has been a tremendously difficult period for me. I crave the understanding of my many supporters at home and abroad and hope that people everywhere who have shown me such kindness and love will respect my position. I sincerely thank my dear family for their unwavering love and support in every decision that I have taken in my young life. I thank the organizers of Miss Jamaica World, especially Mr. Haughton James, for providing the opportunity that allowed me to represent my country in a meaningful and positive way. I thank Jamaicans everywhere for embracing me in a manner that made me determined to do everything in my power to show the world all that we are and all that we can be as a people. It has been my honour to represent you. God bless Jamaica.
