Subject: When I'm With You

Hello Freddy .. I don't remember the sequence of events with the re-release of "When I'm With You" as is cited by others and in Wikipedia. I was Music Director of KBPI Denver in the mid to late '80's .. In the early summer of 1987 Tom Hunter our Program Director left for MTV. He was replaced by Gabe Baptiste. Gabe would have a list of music which he would call "secret weapons" and every month or so we would cart up one of those 45's or tracks and put them into rotation. We were the Arbitron ratings leader for music stations in Denver. In mid 1988 Gabe asked me listen to the Sheriff 45 and we both agreed that it was perfect for the radio station. I carted up the song, we put it into rotation and the phones went crazy. The song went on our music research test tape within a couple of weeks and tested through the roof. KBPI reported to Radio & Records as an AOR, but we were actually an AOR/CHR hybrid. Your song went into three hour rotation and within a short period of time we forced the CHR in Denver, at the time - KRXY - now KS107.5 - to add the song and report it to the trades. The Capitol rep in Denver - Randy Robins if I recall - begged Capitol to re-release the record. In the meantime KRXY's airplay had a domino effect with other CHR's across the country and it was added everywhere. Gabe needs to be given credit as well as the guys at KRXY instead of the Las Vegas DJ. Gabe went on to program at MTV, program Telemundo and I believe he is currently programming at NBC/Universal.
