Sorry I’ve been away and haven’t written. I was back in the 80’s courtesy Zion, the latest CD from former Sheriff and Alias front man Freddy Curci. Many may wonder what happened to Curci who penned 80’s classics “When I’m With You” and “More Than Words Can Say.” Zion shows him to be alive and well and living with the some of the same demons as many of us. It’s also safe to say Freddy’s voice sounds it’s silver and strong self as he can still go where ever he wants. His fan base will be very happy with this endeavor. The groupies will swoon over the love ballad “I’m Running Home.”
Despite the beautiful “Running Home” and the peppy and catchy “All It Takes Is A Minute” (which Journey wishes they wrote) what some of the best work on this CD has are balls. When you find there’s no coffee and Starbucks is too far to walk it can feel like “The Sky Is Falling.” Great lyrics and great harmonies aside, we, like Freddy in the 80’s, will never be that innocent again. “One Man Alone” is simply the best pure Rock song Curci has ever written. Where Alice In Chains bathes in the Styx, this angst- riddled confession features Cantrell like power chords with great harmonies and dark lyrics. But save your prayers for a man that’s really there. “How Much Longer Is Forever” shares similar sentiments and the haunting “Crash The Mirror” which closes the CD is also a dark disturbing journey to the abyss. Joey Scoleri’s howling Coney Hatch guitar and Curci’s silver screams of anguish match the perfect ending to "Mirror" and Zion.
In between there are dangerous hot girls, pressure to meet the expectations set by past success and a solid group of tight and well produced musicians. Beware because the Devil lurks around every corner. All these surround strong vocals provided by Freddy Curci to produce a great effort worthy of a concert tour. Congratulations Zion. You’ve set the bar pretty high for the next Whitesnake or Foreigner CD. Zion is on Frontiers Records and available at www.frontiers.it
