The US government says it will not renegotiate the planned restructuring of US forces stationed in Japan. The Democratic Party of Japan, which is to take over power, is calling for a review of the US military realignment in Japan.

US State Department spokesman Ian Kelly told reporters on Monday the US has no intention to renegotiate the replacement plan for the Futenma air station or the US Marines' relocation to Guam with the Japanese government.

The US government has maintained Japan's new government should observe bilateral agreements made under the former administration.

The Democratic Party is also opposed to Japan's refueling mission for coalition vessels in the Indian Ocean in support of the US-led war against terrorism in Afghanistan.

Kelly said Japan is playing a quite significant role in the campaign. He said stability in Afghanistan is for the benefit of the international community as a whole, including Japan.

Kelly indicated it is up to each nation to decide how to contribute, but that the US expects the 2 nations would continue to cooperate under the new Japanese administration.
