US Defense Secretary Robert Gates has indicated that the planned cut in the defense budget will not affect the United States' ability to defend the mainland against ballistic missile threats from North Korea.

Gates sought support for a plan to downscale the missile defense program at a hearing of the Senate Armed Services Committee on Thursday. The US Defense Department has decided on a plan to deploy up to 30 ground-based interceptor missiles, mainly on the West Coast, instead of the 44 that were initially planned.

Gates indicated that he intends to develop a more effective missile shield by strengthening the deployment of sea-based missile interceptors that would be attached to Aegis destroyers.

He also suggested abandoning a study of airborne laser weapons for intercepting North Korean missiles. He said there would be little chance of using the technology, as it would require US aircraft to enter North Korean or Chinese airspace.

Gates: Interceptor missiles can protect US

US Defense Secretary Robert Gates has expressed confidence that his country can shoot down any North Korean missile aimed at the US.
美國防部長蓋茲表示他對於國家能射下所有北韓瞄準美國飛彈的信心
Gates made the remark at the Senate Appropriations Committee on Tuesday.
蓋茲在星期二的參議院審計報告上這麼說
He said 30 ground-based interceptor missiles already in silos or under construction in the states of Alaska and California are fully adequate to protect the US from any long-range missile launched by a rogue country like North Korea.
他說 三十具地基攔截飛彈已部署在阿拉斯加或加州的發射井或在生產中 且能完全保護美國免於任何由如北韓等流氓國家發射的長程飛彈

Gates expressed concern that North Korea is developing long-range missiles at a faster pace than expected.

He added that if the North Korean missile threat increases and 30 interceptors are not enough, he wants to increase the deployment.
