This is the very technique that Rona uses on Debra Messing. Rona describes how she colors Debra’s hair to make the most of her curls and styles created by her husband, Luke O’Connor:
For Debra Messing, she’s a medium/dark ash brown naturally. I wanted to see ribbons of color in her curls. Envision the shape of the head and how highlights are normally done on the sides above the ears. They are horizontal. I do vertical highlighting instead. I use three foils, back to back, of copper, golden copper and auburn. This gives a wider streak without being too light. I skip a section of about a full inch then and paint the hair an auburn brown. For the front of the face, I use more of the lighter colors so it’s softer looking and opens up the face. Debra has very pale skin and with her skin and her yellow undertones, she can’t have too much light around her face, but with the dark behind it, it doesn’t wash her out. So when you see Debra in person, you can see three ribbons of colors running through her curls.
