If you think can, light up a cigarette casually while you're babysitting. See how the kids act around you. I'd say ask the parents first tho. I always asked first and of the dozen or so smoking and non-smoking families I sat for from when I was 13 to when I went to college, I was allowed to smoke openly in most of the homes where the parents smoked too. If they didn't smoke I didn't ask, but I prefered to sit for smoking families for that very reason.

How much respect do the kids you sit for have for you? What do you do when they get into trouble? For me, some families just told me to put them in time-out, but that didn't always work so I was sometimes allowed to give the kids a spanking. If I had to do that, I found that lighting up a cigarette before giving a kid a spanking helped calm my nerves for the task at hand. That may sound weird and some people think spanking is totally wrong, but it worked.

I'll be going home for summer break soon and I've already talked to a couple of the families I babysat for and they've asked me to sit for them again this summer.
