Smoking can reduce stress, but it can have also the opposite effect. Many of my friends state that when they smoke a cigarette they calm down and they feel more relaxed. To be honest this sounds like an excuse to me very often: as soon as they start feeling a little nervous, they grab for a cigarette (they sort of are convinced that they need a cigarette to reduce their stress); this is especially true for those people who smoke a lot. So, if on the one hand smoking seems to reduce stress, on the other hand getting stressed increases smoking. Therefore, guys, if you are entering into a stressful period you better find some other solution for reducing stress: take a run, read a book or listen to some nice music. There is another observation to make here: smoking CAN also increase stress! I noticed that some of my friends who were very calm and unstressed people before they started smoking, became very hectic ands frantic once they had started. For example, when we are sitting in a non-smokers restaurant or in a cinema, they run out as soon as they can to smoke, they can’t concentrate at school because they think about smoking and they are always worried to run out of cigarettes: so they are somehow “stressed by smoking”. Of course this is just some example and I am not saying that this happens to all smokers, but it is a matter of fact that many smokers need a cigarette to overcome the stress provoked by not-smoking for a longer time. Isn’t that a contradiction in terms?
