I don't think anyone thinks she's a "big name" model. A lot of girls are wannabe models. Some girls are actually models, some girls have modeled but didn't make it big.
Posing for a photoshoot you pay for isn't modeling.
Anything the girl/her bf/her family/etc paid for isn't modeling.

Anything a girl modeled/posed for and GOT PAID to do so, means that girl is/was a model. Even if it was in the past.

BTW, winning a contest/pageant isn't getting paid so no, that's not a model.

Joe Thornton thinks she has something special/unique since he chose her over all the girls in North America who were chasing him.
