It is strictly a legal matter. Church and State should not mix. Religion and politics should be separate.
You can't say that in the case of illegal immigration it's a case of mercy. Illegal immigrants are choosing to come here, ILLEGALLY. Slaves were brought against their will. There are legal ways to become an American citizen, one need not live here illegally. Immigrants might live in a country that lack the freedoms of America. In which case they should fight for their freedoms of their own country just like our fore fathers did, the way our soldiers always have done so.
Even Christ, full of mercy, said we are to obey the laws of the land. "Render unto Caesar's the things that are his and unto God the things which belong to him"
