The Preterist Reformation

For years pre-millennial, pretribulational, dispensationalism has gone virtually unchallenged. That time is slowly coming to an end as the truths of preterism are beginning to take hold. Many Christians have become weary of the fanciful speculations of such as Jack Van Impe, Hal Lindsey, Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins. This dissatisfaction has led to a renewed interest in sound hermeneutical and exegetical principles. The more this movement gains exposure and acceptance, the more the die-hard dispensationalists increase their attacks and accusations of heresy. But that's to be expected. All necessary and valuable revolutions can expect such assaults and should welcome them because they bring about debate and debate can bring about truth. That's a good thing!

As the critics of Christianity and atheists and agnostics continue to fling their claims of deception against the church at large, dispensationalists continue to hide behind their unsatisfactory and unbiblical dual fulfillment and postponement theories. Only preterism adequately responds to these scoffers of our faith. Jesus said He was coming back in that generation of His day. According to futurists, He has not yet come. Scoffers cry out against our Lord and Savior "liar, deceiver, false prophet!" Preterism says "not so!" Jesus said He was coming back and He did! The inspired writers of the NT said Jesus was coming back in their lifetimes. But according to futurists, He has not yet come--some two thousands years later! And the scoffers shout and point their fingers--"They lied, they are deceivers, they are false teachers!" With total impotence, the dispensationalists mumble that Jesus is delayed, His coming is always imminent. Preterists boldly and confidently say, "The apostles were right. He came back in their lifetimes. They are NOT deceivers and false teachers!"

It is sad that the very names used by reprobates and unbelieving enemies of the Church to attempt to discredit Christianity are the same names now being flung maliciously at preterists and fellow brothers and sisters in Christ by dispensationalists. This should never be! It is my prayer and desire that we return to the simple words of the Scriptures, lay aside any preconceived ideas no matter how precious and how long held, and let the Bible say what it says. Are we willing to have our world shaken upside down? Are we willing to let God be true and every man a liar? Are we willing to cast aside anything that hinders our understanding no matter what the cost in friendship and monetary gain?

Thanks be to God that many are answering "yes" to these questions. In the process, friendships have become strained and even lost, but new ones have emerged. It is not an easy task ahead for the biblical position of preterism for, sadly, there are as many enemies from within as there are from without! But God is the One behind this growing reformation. His truth will ultimately survive and emerge victorious. The more preterism expands in the hearts and minds of God's people, the more His Church takes her rightful and expected place in the affairs of this world. Instead of doom and gloom, there is hope and optimism because there is seen a Savior Who now reigns in glory and Who is now ever present with us and we with Him. The Lord reigns now from on high! He is building His Church and the gates of hell with not stand against Her. And He has seen fit to give us the honor of fulfilling that plan. What more do we need?

In Christ
