That I really don't not know. Unfortunately the epiphany I had was an experience that cannot be explained in a nice 'cut and dry' way. The process for me went like this:
The pentagon climate report caused me to research the Mayan calendar, this led me to read all sorts of things that I never bothered to research, things like Atlantis, aliens, indigenous predictions, etc etc.
These types of things I read with a grain of salt and really thought they were beyond ridiculous (which is why I appreciate and understand your skepticism), but it was always my method of seeking to first fully research before pronouncing judgement.
All of this searching led me to the Hopi prophecies - which were so accurate that I suspected that they were written recently but were being passed off as ancient. I didn't believe them at all, but I was nevertheless very intrigued by them and kept going back and re-reading them. I also tried to find out if they were truly ancient - something that I never was able to prove conclusively until my epiphany. My epiphany was all the proof I needed.
This epiphany was both huge and subtle and nearly impossible to describe - but I suddenly knew things as if I just remembered them - as if I always knew it but the information was blocked form my memory.
That said, even the future predictions of the Hopi and the Mayan predictions were not confirmed by the epiphany - only that these were indeed the 'end times'. It was definite and yet vague as to what exactly might happen.
So while I strongly suspect that the Mayan calendar date of 2012 is correct, that is something I cannot say that I *know*. Various Hindu prophecies say that the Kali Yuga ends in 100-200 years from now - I wish I knew the date, but I don't.
Of course I understand that no intelligent, open minded person one can possibly believe these types of things without a life altering experience that will shake one out of the mundane reality we think is the only one there is.
The thing I keep urging is to keep an open mind and be curious, as the Bible says "seek and ye shall find".
