You should get a good field guide, or an experienced mushroom picker, and identify them very carefully before you eat any of them. The majority of poisonous mushrooms will only make you sick, but there are a few deadly species out there. A. Campestris is one you cannot mistake once you know it, and all puffballs are safe to eat. When you have a puffball, cut it from top to bottom and make sure there is no structure, and the flesh is white or creamy white. If it has gone yellow, it will be bitter and unpleasant. If it has structure inside it, it may be a button-stage mushroom, but it is not a puffball, and therefore not safe. Shaggymanes are safe but must be cooked immediately or they will deteriorate into mush. Morels are safe, too, but I've never seen a fresh morel.

I was at a scout camp once, where I saw a bed of golden chanterelles, stomped into mush by an idiotic Scout leader who was afraid his boys might take it into their minds to eat one. These are choice edible mushrooms and there were about 300 of them in this bed. If you were going to buy a couple of pounds of them it would cost you more than you wish to pay for mushrooms. They were not only edible, they were beautiful.
