In fact it's dead easy with cash. The faxed invitation was rejected at the embassy, so I went to the Russian Tourist Office in Piccadilly who sold me an invitation and voucher for £35 which enabled me to buy a visa at the embassy for £95 (same day service). Total cost £130 just to get a visa - outrageous!
Only a week til totality.
