I saw that Michael. And the entire post made me so sad I didn't trust myself to respond and do so in a civil manner. I have very mixed feelings about Israel's very hard bombardment in such an urban area. No matter how accurately they attempt to guide their missiles and bombs they can't help but have a great many civilian casualties. On the other hand, I have to condemn a fighting force that launches mortar attacks from the steps of school buildings and hospitals. Their purpose is to cause the death of innocents so as to point an accusing finger at the Israeli retaliation. The Israelis at least are making an effort to minimize civilian casualties whereas the Hamas fighters are deliberately putting children in harms way.

I would hope that this would prod Israel's ally, the U.S., into demanding that both sides negotiate a peaceful settlement, but I'm not holding my breath. This small nation is surrounded on all sides by Arab nations that have sworn to destroy it and so they view all attempts at negotiations as attempts to whittle away at their power base and leave them weaker and unable to defend themselves.
