Subject: Planning Permission

Paul's post about Noak's Ark reminds me the problem the builder has pointed out to me. The rear bedroom of our 1st floor flat is really dingy, mainly due to there only being a fairly small window in the room, so although its south facing it doesnt get much light.

My idea was to open it up with a pair of French wondows opening onto a balcony, either an actual balcony or at least rails across the opening so people can sit in the fresh air and sunshine.

He spoke to someone who knows about these things and the response was we are very unlikely to get permission as it would overlook the downstairs garden. The fact that the flat above have a roof terrace overlooking it doesnt seem to matter. Nor does the fact that the person who's flat it is doesnt object, in fact would be very happy for me to do it in return for me sorting out her jungle garden. So, it looks like Im stuck with a south facing bedroom which is dingy. Its a Victorian house converted into flats many years ago, but the window is a horrible metal framed thing from the 60s I suspect. It was the council that put it in!
