STRANGE BEDFELLOWS
Petra and Pedal Boat Move to Winter Quarters

Münster's plastic-boat-loving swan Petra has been moved to her winter home at the local zoo for the second year in a row. The swan and the boat have been together for one-and-a-half years now and their relationship is still going strong.

It's a heartwarming tale of everlasting love that only a Grinch could hate. Petra, the German swan who fell in love with a swan-shaped pedal boat one year ago, made her annual move this week to specially built indoor quarters where she will spend the winter (more...) with her plastic mate.

On Wednesday, a director at the local zoo in the western German city of Münster, attracted the swan with lettuce and grains and then escorted the lovebirds to their temporary residence.

Dozens of journalists turned out to see Münster's favorite daughter, creating a media spectacle on her moving day. Petra would probably prefer to stay on the local lake where she lives, but her plastic pedal boat could be damaged when the lake freezes over this winter. Last year, Petra was distraught as the boat's owners tried to take the pedalo into winter storage.

Officials at the local zoo are putting Petra and her mate up again this year until a luxury enclosure can be built for her at the yacht club on the lake in February 2008.

For now, though, Petra will be placed in a specially built hut at the city's zoo, and her beloved pedal boat will be anchored within eyesight.

Petra first fell for the pedal boat (more...) in the summer of 2006, and this is the second year that the unusual couple -- now celebrities the world over -- will winter at the zoo together.
