I rarely use it - I send texts in fully punctuated English - but not because I disapprove of text language in principle

There is a practical element as it does makes texts shorter and therefore cheaper to send. But I do believe that it is also think it's a sub-cultural thing among young people. Different social groups have always invented their own languages which distinguish them from others. There's a lot of that in it.

It's a cultural thing - I think it is a youth language, but langauges have a way of filtering into the mainstream, so I can imagine features of text language becoming the norm and mingling with all the other possible ways of communicating.

No. Text language serves various purposes - but it is really intended to be used for expressing complicated concepts - it is more of an instant communication thing for simple day-to-day arrangements and transactions. It is not a register that will catch on for more complex forms of communication.

I understand the idea, but I don't know what I think of it. In theory, text language could and should simply be just another possible way of using language for particular purposes to add to all the registers we already have. There are people who fear that if our young people only communicate in this way, they will lost the ability to write in more complex language and thereby to understand more complex concepts, but I choose to believe that this in not the case. My experience with teenagers is that on the whole they know which language register to use for which purpose. I rarely encounter text language in college essays, for example.

>8 - On the whole, do you think the trend of txt
>language positive or negative?

Neither. Optimistically, I see it as just another addition to the ways we can communicate.
