Thankfully, most major papers have 'style books' which their journalists must conform to in matters of spelling and grammar. Everyone uses them except the headline writers. (joke!)

I disagree

Telegraphers and teletype operators used txt type acronyms such as gd (good day) ga (go ahead) and tks long before text code, and they didn't take it into everyday life.
