Subject: The division of India

Just saw a programme last night on the division of India into India and Pakistan. No-one came out of it well.

The Muslim leader (forget his name) seemed determined to fulfill his dream of a Muslim state. Nehru seemed determined to create a centralised, socialist state, run by a national government, and turned down the opportunity for keeping India whole by giving political power to individual states (as had always been the case previously), and Britain for not doing more to avoid the division, leaving the actual border declaratino to the last possible moment, and withdrawing troops so there were hardly any security forces available to manage the mass migration. Mountbatten realised it would be bloody, made far worse by delaying the announcement of the actual border, but didnt want Britain to be responsible for managing it all, and Ghandi for not appealing to Muslims.
Politicians rarely do the people any favours.
