In theory, maybe. But in practice, it doesn't work like that. It would only be discrimination in that way if we all began with a clean slate and on equal footing. But we don't - we are part of a history of serious inequality and abuse, and we can't just clean that all away with one sweep of a brush.

A white person using the word "nigger" to a black person is still too raw - it still conjures up too much history and pain which is only in the process of being healed - we are not there yet. Just as if you called me "bitch" it would echo horribly to me of male domination over women, and give me bad feelings - I could not find it as neutral or amusing as you could.

Things are improving of course, but we have not yet reached a time where we are all so equal that we can say whatever we like when we like. I hope we will one day - but we're not there yet.
