Absolutely. You are completely right. I read a very interesting paper on this once which showed all the scientific evidence of exactly what you are saying.

What the paper proved was that I may be more genetically similar to a particular black person than I am to the white person next door.

It is because skin colour is such a visible thing that it has become such a huge discriminating factor between people, and it is of no more consequence than, as you say, the size of one's nose. That's what I meant when I said that the groups "black" and "white" are artificial categories.
