i don't know an answer; i reckon the "norsification" of the weekdays just got stuck at this point. in fact, there are three (!) different names for saturday in german: "samstag" (right, derived from sabbath), was introduced thru christianization from the south and southwest. "sonnabend" ("sun-evening", the evening, later the day, before sunday) entered germany from the northwest thru the anglo-saxon mission via boniface the missionary (born as wynfreth in essex, england and got lynched by the friesians). "saterdag" is used by the friesians (in west coastal germany and the netherlands) and in the westphalian dialect.
