As you know Toy Tiger, I used to think the Bible was pure nonsense and argued strongly against it, and now I believe in it - but not necessarily the same as literalists.

After my epiphany, I had to take the Bible seriously, so I started reading it, reading other ideas about it. I now am certian that the Bible is allegory and not to be taken literally.

Please hear me out (this will be a long post - but some of it is copied from my blog). I'll try not to be too overbearing on this subject - but it's one that's really had me fired up recently! :-)

Here's some quick examples (all coincidences of course!): Jesus was born at the very start of the age of pisces - the fish. Today the symbol of the fish is used for Christianity, and Jesus is known as the fisher of men.

The Old Testament was written around the start of the age of Aries, the ram. Believe it or not, there are more references to the ram than any other animal in the OT. And today Jews still use the ram's horm to usher in Rosh HaShannah. In addition, prior to the age of aries was the age of Taurus (the bull). Recall that moses was outraged when the Isrealites made a golden calf - the symbol of the bull. Just as Moses was to destroy the old age of Taurus, Jesus was to destroy the old age of Aaries:

“Verily, verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven.” [John 6:32]

Then consider that the Persian religion of Mithraism was a Sun-god religion, Mithras was (like Jesus) born on Dec. 25 (a symbol of the winter solstice), of a virgin and in a manger no less. Mithraism existed hundreds of years before Jesus. Jesus is also known as the Son who had 12 apostles around him. Our Sun has 12 signs of the zodiac.

Finally, consider the incredible numbr of references to the number 12 in the OT and NT - here are some that I've copied from my blog (and there are many other instances of 12 symbology in other traditions as well):

The Hebrew Bible has its 12 tribes of Israel, the biblical Jacob had 12 sons, Ishmael begat twelve princes, king Solomon had 12 lions and twelve officers, Elijah ploughed with twelve oxen, Joshua set up twelve stones. In Genesis 42:13 it states that “Thy servants are twelve brethren, sons of one man”. The New Testament has Jesus and His 12 Apostles, in the Book of Revelation there are 12,000 people sealed from each of the twelve tribes of Judah (12 x 12 = 144,000 “servants of God” as mentioned in Revelation 7:2-4). The Book of Revelation also says that there are 12 fruits in the Tree of Life: “On each side of the river stood the Tree of Life, bearing 12 crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month…”. In Matthew 26:53 it is stated “…he shall presently give me more than twelve legions of angels”. And after Jesus feeds the multitude of 5,000, there are 12 baskets remaining.

Finally, in my blog I argue that this use of 12 is symbolic of the precession of the equinoxes - that will spur our spiritual evolution.

I never would have come to these conclusions without my epiphany of course, but I think the literalists are a smokescreen for the most part - designed to keep us from knowing the truth about Jesus (whom I do believe really did exist btw).

Anyway, please consider reading my full post on this subject sometime (I also explain my interpretation of the 6 days it took God to create the world - that it may actually be the literal truth):
