Stealing bicycles by sawing down the trees they were chained to was a preferred method of stealing bikes in Toronto, when I was working there. I don't know if they are still doing it. I don't imagine many people are still chaining their bikes to trees. I did see many stripped bike frames chained to parking meters, too.
