Just a short note: Jeannine: do you realize that all Western countries are socialist? What is socialism if not an advanced form of democracy?

Do you see your country without public education, public roads, public utilities? That's socialism.

What about common standards for work safety, medical qualifications, common laws? Do you see yourself going to a doctor who hasn't passed a medical school or using a lawyer that hasn't passed the bar? That's socialism too.

What about the armed forces in a democratic country? If that's not socialism at work then what is? The way it works: all of the citizens of the given country have given up the right to defend themselves individually, by agreeing to establish an armed force to do the defending for them.

What about the constitutions under which both of your and our countries govern. Those are socially inspired documents.

Later I'll write to you about Ayn Rand, if you want...

but when I use the word "Socialism" I am referring to the Marxist theory of socialism. I should have been more specific.

If the commentators who are whipping up people's fears today, took the time to read the original philosophy of Socialism and Communism, they would be using the latter term. The reason they are not using it, is because China who holds all of USA's Iraq war debt, is Communist and they don't want to ruffle her feathers. Can you immagine what would happen to USA's economy if China called in its loans? Well, I don't want to think about it, and I live in a relative Socialist "Utopia" here in Canada.
