Subject: Denver's been fun this week. And a few comments about last night's speech.

The city was crazy yesterday -- it made me feel like I was back in DC for a little bit.

I thought Obama's speech last night was very good. I saw him speak in person back in 2004, but I didn't get tickets for last night so we watched it on tv. I'm still waiting for the report from friends who were at Invesco. One of my girlfriends who also saw Obama with me in '04 was at Invesco last night, and I'm curious to hear about any differences.

I'm so sad that my stepmom passed away last year and wasn't able to see the speech. She was a white woman, divorced from a black Kenyan, and she struggled to put her black son through the best education possible. She sacrificed so that he would not want; she sent her son to live with his grandmother when she had to work multiple jobs; and she returned to college to obtain her degree as an adult. I think she would be very proud and very encouraged by Obama's speech.

Finally, I hate pandering. I know it's part of the political process, but it drives me nuts. When Obama made his comment (and I loosely paraphrase) about how as a nation we might have differences about homosexuality but gays and lesbians should not face discrimination, I was mildly irritated. I wish a candidate could openly say that homosexuals are people like everyone else. No one should disagree about homosexuality because it's no one's business whom we choose to love. There shouldn't be anything to discriminate against because it shouldn't be an issue. And I strongly hope that we end the ridiculous "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy in this next administration.
