Subject: Everything's "fine" for SLC Cementon

The DEC has finally acted - after three years of complaints and inquiries by citizens - and fined SLC's Cementon plant for emissions violations. And note that these violations are of emissions levels established more than four decades ago, which are way out of date by current pollution standards.

The $285K fine might seem like a lot of money to those who missed the fact that SLC thought nothing of throwing $51 Million at their attempt to force the Greenport Plant down the throats of local citizens. But such fines,m and even larger ones, haven't hurt the company's profitability - still in the billions of dollars each year - and its willingness to continue to write off such fines as a cost of doing business that's cheaper than making the investments necessary to avoid them.

All those who foolishly believed that SLC ever had any intent to become a good corporate neighbor (free hot dogs and pony rides notwithstanding) now have yet another layer of egg on their faces.

And the citizens who have the ill-fortune to live downwind from this monster (which includes most of us to some degree) will ultimately be the ones who pay the price in damaging, life-limiting long-term health problems that have now been incontrovertibly shown to be the result of airborne pollutants such as those emitted so copiously by SLC's Cementon facility.
