During that period, common guns were matchlock, snaphaunce, miquelet, wheellock and doglock (with early non-dog flintlocks just coming into use). I can't say for sure what was most common among pirates themselves, but with the possible exception of the very complex wheellock I think they all would have seen a fair amount of use. Not to say wheellocks weren't used, but I'd imagine they'd tend to prefer simpler mechanisms in a situation like theirs where guns suffered a lot of abuse and spare parts would likely be scarce.
