This class has been helpful to me in working with my students. Although many of the students I currently work with are not yet at the adolescent stage I have seen how many of the things we talk about in class relate to them as well. An example of this was the other day when I was trying to help a 2nd grader understand how to subtract numbers by borrowing. While looking over his work and noticing that he was missing a large percentage of the questions I recognized that the reason he was struggling was that he was accommodating the new information rather than assimilating. He understood how to subtract but rather than borrowing when the number he was subtracting from was smaller than the number being subtracted he simply reversed them and subtracted the larger number by the smaller number.
For Example: If the number was
231
-123

Rather than borrowing from the tens place and making the 1 an 11, he simply subtracted 3-1. In his mind it didn't matter what order the numbers were in, he was going to subtract the bigger number by the smaller number each time because that is how subtraction worked in his mind. I was excited to see this and be able to identify it as an example of what I was learning in class and it helped me in understanding his thinking and why he was working the problem that way and ultimately enabled me to correct the error. It's always fun when you can take what you learn and apply it in your life.
