I too found Patrick's presentation to be a huge eye opener. I knew the statistics were alarming, but not to that degree. I wish the research would have included some information on teen pregnancy. While STDs may be one outcome of unprotected sex, pregnancy is another which many teens aren't prepared for. If I remember correctly, the Commercial Appeal did a special about two years ago on infant mortality in the North Memphis area (specifically 38108). The study found that 38108 had a higher infant mortality rate than some third world countries. This hit close to home with me because I grew up in the 38108 area - my mom still lives there.

We must do something to educate our children. Many of them aren't thinking beyond the now. They don't see the consequences and think they are invincible. I think it's important not to only educate them on their bodies and safe sex, but implications of their actions. If we could somehow get across to them that with every choice comes a consequence and some consequences can be life altering, perhaps they will be less likely to engage in this risky behavior.
