I have been reflecting on parental involvement and its role on academic success in the classroom. In my teacher training, I was always taught that as a teacher it is important to worry about what is in your locus of control. What happens in my classroom is all I can control. To focus on parenting at the student's homes can be a waste of time and energy. Now that I am a teacher I find that when children do not perform well academically the parents are almost always the ones who are assumed responsible. I think this can be unfair especially at a school where the majority of the families live in poverty.

When no parents come to teacher student conferences, a lot of times teachers automatically blame the parents. But in the shoes of the parents, they are working three jobs just to stay afloat. You can not blame the parents for believing that putting food on the table is more important then going to the conference.

I think all to often we blame parents for not being involved with the schools. Although yes, they do have some effect, we can not allow that effect to dictate whether or not the child is going to be an academic success.
