In reply to: Carolyn Brown 's message, "Chapter 2 My Students and Behavioral Theories" on 10:22:16 01/20/08 Sun

I found Carolyn's post to be extremely thought provoking and insightful. As a high school teacher, I witness various students continually sucking their thumbs. Before reading this post I always dismissed this action as merely a bad habit. But upon reading Carolyn's post I have come to realize that this action is more then a habit, it is a psychological response.

While reflecting on my high school career, I don't recall thumb sucking being quite as pervasive. Has there been an increase in the amount of thumb sucking because of increased pressure and anxiety being placed on our youth, or is thumb sucking more prevalent in an urban high school? Furthermore have there been studies linking this behavior to more specific causes.

Thanks to the post I am replying to, I will no longer view my students sucking their thumbs as a sign of immaturity, instead, I will view it as a sign that my student may be having trouble coping with some event in his or her life.
