This is one point that I've thought a lot about as well. Are the genuinely religious simply disposed to a gene that makes them more psychologically vulnerable to religion? There is no answer to that question. Although, I have listened to many recent post-modern leaders of the religious faith, and they're willing to integrate the psychological sciences into their perception of faith.

A few months ago I was reading Christopher Hitchens book "god is not Great." He makes the same argument that people who have a strong belief in god are psychologically "weak" and in need of an invisible judge to keep their lives in check.

These arguments make me wonder how atheists would fare under Fowler's moral development scale? Are they generally more or less faithfully developed in moral reasoning than those of faith communities?
