Subject: Hank's emotions were running wild -

first being sent to the depths of despair by the loss of one of his men, a good friend, and then, to find out it was all a terrible mistake...

"John, you just take it easy. We're here and we're going to take good care of you, all right?" He rushed to reassure the paramedic, anxious to make up for the hours and hours of loneliness he must've suffered, wondering why he had been abandoned...

Johnny nodded weakly, painfully, too overcome with relief at the sight of a familiar face to respond.

Hank flinched as he saw the effort it took for that one small response and leaned closer, still holding on to Johnny's hand. "I'm sorry it took us so long to get here...there was some kind of mixup at the hospital," Hank said, not wanting to go into the details. "We've all been worried about you."

Johnny's eyes closed momentarily, a great wave of relief washing over him, for the moment, superceding the pain. He had been so lonely, and so scared, wondering what had happened to the rest of his crew...his family. He should've known that a hospital screwup would be the only way to keep his extended family away.

Hank pulled a chair close to the bed and sat down, noting that the administrator had left and that the nurse was keeping watch from a distance. He maintained contact with his paramedic, wanting to give him all the reassurance possible to ease his mind.

He leaned closer when Johnny tried to speak.

"R...Roy?" His voice was painfully weak.

Hank was expecting the question. "Roy's all right John. He's out of surgery and they got all the glass from his eyes. He's been asking about you." Hank winced as he thought of the needless pain Roy had been put through, all on account of some miscommunication. The thought reminded him...he needed to call and let them know...but first, his friend here in critical care demanded his attention.

Johnny breathed a sigh of relief. Sometimes he worried whether he had really dreamed talking to Roy or not. But there was one question remaining. "Blind?"

Hank paused the briefest of moments, but decided to be honest. "We don't know yet. We'll just have to let him heal up and see."

"Can I...see...him?" He was eternally grateful for his captain's presence, but right now, there was only one person he wanted to see, to be able to know everything would be okay...

Hank's face softened and he patted Johnny's arm reassuringly. "Not right now. He's not strong enough yet. Just you wait and see. Soon the nurses are going to be threatening to throw him out of here." He smiled, perhaps the first genuine smile he had felt in what seemed like forever.

Johnny nodded almost imperceptibly, this being the only way he could convey the tremendous relief he felt at Cap's words... He could barely keep his eyes open.

Hank noted his struggles and decided to let his friend rest. He needed to have a talk with Johnny's doctor anyway. He gripped Johnny's hand more tightly. "Now you lay back there and rest. I'll be back in just a minute, okay?"

Johnny was asleep even before he finished the sentence.

Hank took one last look at his friend, closed his eyes, drawing a deep breath of relief, then strode off with purpose, determined to find out exactly what had happened to Johnny and determined to get to the bottom of the snafu that had left a lot of people in grief...
