Subject: Chet couldn't hear anymore...

He'd heard too much the way it was.

'Johnny, dead.' Those words shouldn't be in the same sentence, let alone occupy the same thought. He turned on his heels and ran out of the hospital, leaving the other three stunned men on their own to face the gruesome details.

Once outside, he rested his hands on his knees and gulped in a deep breath of fresh air. It didn't help. Johnny was still dead. He shook his head in disbelief.

How could this have happened? Johnny was talking at the scene. Talking to HIM! He hadn't wanted to leave his side, but Cap had called on him. There had been business to attend to yet, but still...

At least he had shown Johnny that he had cared. He hoped Johnny had known how much. His mind wandered back to the whole horrific scene, seeing Johnny lying there in so much pain, so much blood, squeezing his shoulder lightly. If only he could go back and tell him...tell him what a good friend he was, tell him...

Chet felt like he was going to be ill.
