Subject: From out of the brilliant white light before him,--Take 2

John Gage saw the figure of a woman appear. She was more beautiful than any woman he had ever seen. Her shown with the fire of sunrise. Her eyes were like two sapphires beneath a swift flowing stream. She had chestnut hair that cascaded down past her shoulders like endless bands of silk. Her facial features and hands were flawless. There were no markings or signs of age anywhere.

Yet all this outward beauty seemed just so much accessory. Her real lovliness seem to come from somewhere within her, radiating outward from her center. It seemed to take that which was already there and augment it.

In any other circumstance, the first thing John would have done is ask her for her phone number! But not now! This creature that he viewed before him seemed to be above that. Somehow, the attraction he felt for her went beyond the Standard Operational Gage Procedure when it came to a pretty girl.

"My name is Laurel." The figure said with a voice that was more music than speach. "I have waited a long time for this opportunity, Mr. Gage. We all have."

We? What in the world could she possibly be talking about? We? There were just her and Johnny present in the room.

Laurel's eyes gleemed with an extra gleeful brightness suggesting that she had a marvelous secret that she was just busting to tell him. But no! Now was not the time or place.

"Patience, John Roderick! All will be revealed when the proper hour comes." Her silvery tones responsed. "Your partner has just been taken to surgery, I'm told. Would you like to see him?"

Would he?! Man, just point out the direction and get out of his way! Would he ever! If only it were possible.

As if reading his thoughts, Laurel seemed to shimmer with iridescent waves of amusment. "You'd be surprised to find what's possible in this realm of existence." She said then held out her hands to Johnny.

"Come!" She invited him. "Take hold of my hands. We will go together to visit Mr. DeSoto."

Take her hands! Boy, that was a hot one! This chick apparently just doesn't get it. He had just been in an explosion, he was broken and racked with pain from head to foot and this gal wants him to just put all that aside and take her hands. Yea, right! As if he could even move his hands!

Laurel simply smiled with all the brilliance of the morning sun and continued to encourage Johnny.

"Come! Take them! Don't be afraid!" She said.

Well, obviously some people need to be show the impossible before they'll admit to it. OK, just to prove to you that it can't be--. To Johnny's astonishment, his hands did move and met Laurel's just above him.

But were they his hands? As Laurel clasped her hands around his, Johnny saw that they were now translucent and shimmered with the same soft white glow that characterised Laurel's form. He could feel her gently drawing out of the bed and yet when he looked at his immediate surroundings, he could tell there was still a figure lying in the bed. That figure was him, it had to be!

Johnny was seized with fear. He let go of his grip and let himself fall back into his body.

'I won't go! I won't leave here!' He cried silently.

"John, what do you fear? I will be right beside you for the whole journey. I promise, no harm will come to you." Laurel assured him.

'I don't want to go! I won't go! I don't want to see Roy. I want to stay here! I want to stay here!' Johnny replied.

"You want to see him. You know you do." Laurel chided him gently. "The freedom to do so is yours for the asking. Why do you hesistate?"

'I can't leave here!' Johnny's thoughts answered. 'When a man's soul leaves his body, it means he's dead. If my soul leaves this room, I'll die.'

Well, at last the truth was out. Johnny wasn't quite sure what it was about this woman that gave him the confidence to reaveal his inmost fears to her but he did it. Now he waited for her reaction to those fears. He both hoped and dreaded at once that she would give up this mission she seemed to be on, go away and just leave him alone.

Laurel's reaction was simply and immediate in coming. She approached Johnny, embraced him and held him tight. Johnny felt such a peace come over him. He felt his fears all melt away to the point where he couldn't recall what it was he had been afraid of. He felt as if he were a little boy again being held by his mother after having had a frightening dream.

"I give you my world as a citizen of the eternal city, you will not die. I will bring you from this room to see your partner and bring you back safely when all is done." Laurel vowed. She stroked his head as she had done earlier in the Air Ambulance and quietly waited.

"Do you feel stronger now, John?" She asked. "Would you like to come with me and see Roy?"

The immense joy Laurel sensed from Johnny's heart at the mere idea was answer enough. She told hold of his hand again and drew his soul to the outside as she had tried to do earlier. Together they departed. He trusted this woman so much, he would go anywhere she asked with complete confidence.
