Subject: Re: THREE TWITS UP A TREE --CONTINUED

"No way! Forget it!" DJ commanded. "You go off wandering around in the dark -- who knows what might happen!"

"But Stephanie needs help, Deej!" Erin cried out.

Leaping up, she darted away -- flying past DJ with such speed, that when TT1 reached out to grab hold of her -- she came up holding onto only air.

"ERIN!" DJ called out, jumping to her feet and starting after TT3. "ERIN...don't! ERRRIIINNNNN!!!!"

DJ stopped at the edge of the clearing...peering into the blackness of the forest --

"ERIN!" She called out again...but got only the response of an owl's hoot.

A second later, she heard Stephanie moan, then cry out: "Noooo...stay away! Stay away!"

Turning, DJ hurried back to the side of TT2. Leaning down and stroking back her still unconscious friend's hair, she murmured, "It's okay, Steph...it's okay. Everything is going to be okay..."

She wondered if she was trying to convince Steph...or herself...of that desperate hope.

Her head snapped up when she heard a rustling...then movement from within the trees.

"ERIN!?" DJ yelled....

Maybe TT3 had returned on her own! Oh, please...let that be so...or at least--let it be help coming.

"ERIN?" DJ called out once again.

Her heart skipped a beat, when through the thicket...

lumbered the GRIZZLY!

"OH,NO!" DJ gasped. "Oh, NO!"

Subject: This time a different emotion took over. What with Stephanie's severe injuries, and Erin running off into the woods -- probably headed for further trouble -- DJ's mind and body had passed from fear to frustration, and now to anger.

She was angry that she was unable to help Steph, angry that she couldn't convince Erin to stay here until help arrived, and frankly, she was angry that they had not yet been found. And this bear...for some unknown reason, this bear seemed intent on dogging their woodland journey.

Well enough was enough, and DJ looked around quickly, spotting a fallen limb from a tree, snatching it up. With all her fear and frustration as momentum, she rushed forward to stand in front of the bear -- jumping up and down and screaming at him as loudly as she could, trying to make herself appear very big and threatening to the bear.

"Get out of hear you big oaf! Leave us alone!" She threatened the bear in a menacing voice. She didn't even sound like DJ anymore. The bear stopped and looked at her, as if sizing her up all over again.

This only angered DJ further, and she took another menacing step toward the bear, continuing to wave the tree limb in her hand. "I told you ya stupid bear --- go find yourself some entertainment somewhere else! I'm sick of this!"

She continued to rant for several more seconds. Finally, the bear swung his head back and forth and turned back to the woods, to disappear from sight.

DJ slowly walked back to where Stephanie's still form lay, dropping the limb as she went. Weakly, she collapsed on the ground near her friend and put her head in her hands, the anger disappearing as quickly as it had come, replaced by a drained and exhausted feeling of hopelessness.

She knew the bear would only be gone temporarily -- sooner or later he would come back to check them out again. And she wasn't sure if she could pull off the same feat all over again.

She wondered where Erin was and whether or not she was okay. She prayed it was so. She prayed for a miracle. Stephanie needed help and she desperately wanted all of the twits to be in the safe comforting environment of all their E! sisters and the men they loved.

"Please God, let them find us...soon." She listened to the silent forest around her, hoping for any sign that her wish had been granted...

Subject: Back at the Camp!

Tammy had become very agitated not being able to sit still more then a couple of minutes.

Hank knew by the look on her face he wouldn't be able to keep her there much longer . He too was worried it had been 5 hours sense the Twits had disappeared
.
Tammy knelt to pet Hogan. Hank watch the two stare at each other for along time . Then as if the dog had said something to her, she stood up and said she was going to find her friends.

Hanks only reply was, "not with out me."

Tammy turn and started to protest his going, but the look on his face told her it would no good .

"Hank to Roy!" He called over the handy talk.

In matter of seconds Roy answered . Hank told him that Tammy and him where going to search some of the other trails.

"Okay, Cap." Roy replied in a worried tone!

They had been walking for about a hour when Hogan started to whine; he was sniffing the air . Tammy and
Hank looked around with there flashlights .

"Nothing!" Hank said.

Then he heard Tammy gasp turn his flashlight to where hers was and said, "what?"

" LOOK at that tree!" she replied.

Hank looked the tree over and told her a deer must have been rubbing his antler.

Tammy said in an excited voice, "It was no deer that did that!"

"What was it?" Cap asked, not sure if he wanted to hear the answer .

"A bear…" Tammy said in almost a whisper .

"Ma! We'uns is Ready" Zeke called. "We's got the mulesall hitched up an' we's a-ready ta go ta the faihr" He told her.

"Na, hold on jes a minute, thar!" She interrupted him. "You got them hogs slopped?"

"Yes'm!" Zeke replied.

"Roy got that wood chopped?" She continued.

"Yes'm!"

"Mickie and Markie, they done got them last three rows a-corn picked?"

"Yes'm!"

"Whar's Johnny an' Hank?"

"They's just finishin' up cleanin' the barn and gitin' the livestock a-fed!"

"An' yer pa's probably out tendin' the still like always!" Mary Jo said in a tone of tired frustration.

"Yes'm!" Zeke responed plainly.

"Awright! I guess thar ain't no more ta do til nightfall. Go on! Hav a good time!" Mary Jo said.

"YEEHHAAHH! Fellers! She said we could go! Everabody hit the wagin'" Zeke called to his pa and five brothers.

"An' tell yer pa not spend the whole time swappin' sips with them other shiners! He's a-drivin'!" Mary Jo called after Zeke.

"Yes'm!" Zeke said one last time and with that seven men piled into a single buckboard drawn by a two mule team. Johnny struck up a few cords on his banjo, Zeke accompanied him by blowing over the hole of an empty clay jug. Mickey joined in on a Jew's Harp and soon the whole merry scene was making its way down the dirt road to the County Fair five miles away.

"Ma boys!" Ma said seating herself in the rocking chair next to Steph's bed. "They kin git raucous at times but deep down they's good hearted. I do not envy the gals what git 'em though!" Ma said with a smile on her face.

"You have all boys?" Steph asked.

"M-hm" Ma answered. "Six fine, strappin' healthy boys! Thar's Hank, he the oldest. Then thar's Roy. Next come Zeke. Then thar's Mickey and Markie, they's the twins an' last come Johnny! That's how he got 'is name! Pa said 'e was a Johnny-come-lately and so we're a-namin' him Johnny!" Ma slapped Steph's uninjured leg and burst out in the heartiest laugh Steph ever heard. Steph just smiled trying to be polite but was privately repulsed at the idea that a man should wear a name all his like just because it fit some bad pun.

"Yea, we's a-had ar adventures here on the mountin." Ma continued. "Funny, folkes just seem to think it natural ta call ma boys whenever one-a um's a-gitin' inta trouble. they'uns jes seem ta make a fine rescuin' team, ma boys.

Thar was the time when the little Timmons boy got stuck in the swollen creek two springs ago. They done pulled 'im out like tweren't nothin'. Then thar was the time Old Hickory's barn a-caught fiahre caus' his still a-blowed up! Ma Johnny!" Mary Jo said becoming thoughtful and beginning to glow with motherly pride. "He done run right inta that barn. Didn't pay them flames no never mind. He just throwed old Hickory right over 'is shoulders and cahrried 'im righ' out! An' then each a ma boys went in an' saived all the livestock
what was in that barn! Why Zeke! He even went baick in an' saved what jugs Hickory had filled! Yes'm! I's proud a-ma boys."

Ma then looked off to the side as her pensive mood turned more serious.

"A-course, we done had ar troubles, too! Thar was the time Hank was a young'un. He got inta Pa shine 'fore he knew how ta handle it. It kinda got to 'is head and he set Pa's hat on fiahre! We'uns don't talk on that much! It's a dark and troubled part-a ar past that still kinda gits under Pa's skin."

"Zeke mentioned a fued a little while back. What started it?" Stephanie inquired.

Ma jumped right back into reality at the feud's mention. "What started it?" She asked sharply. "What started it? Whah, that thar's the silliest question I ever did hear! What started it? I ain't a-gonna sit here and listen to sich nonsense." Ma got up from her chair and left the room to go into the kitchen. Before she left completely she have Stephanie one last parting shot.

"What started it?--Ha!" and left the room.

While in the kitchen, though, Ma looked out the window at the view of the spreading valley below her. What did start it? Ma suddenly became greatly distressed at the thought that she was unable to trace the roots of something in which their family pride, if not their whole family identity was tied up in.

Steph remained on the bed and worried over what type of hornet's nest she may have stirred up with just one simple question. She didn't have much time to contemplate the matter, however. At that same instant she her quiet footsteps coming up the porch stairs. She could have squealed for joy to see her two fellow twits, Erin and DJ at the door of the cabin. DJ put her finger up to her lips motioning for Stephanie to keep quiet and Stephanie nodded her acknowledgement of the command.

The twits took quick hold of Stephanie and hustled her out the doorway and quickly down the road. Once they were out of the cabin's range, Stephanie burst out in joy and being reunited with her fellow twits.

"Oh, DJ! Erin! Thank God you're here! Thank God you've come! I don't know how much longer I could have stood it! Oh, thank God this nightmare is over at last!" She cried taking hold of DJ and then Erin and holding them so close it almost hurt.

"How's Sally? How's Lorna and Brenda and Tammy and Humble Rookie Mary Ellen? How are Judy and Diane and. . .and. . .oh, how's everybody! Oh, how I've missed you all!"

"Sally-May done sent us'uns ta rescue ya!" DJ said.

"Tammy-Sue and th' others done near wore out a hole in the floor a-pacin' back and forth a-worryin' how ya was." Erin said.

"Huh?" Stephanie said more confused than ever. "What are the two of you talking about?"

Obviously Stephanie was so overcome with joy at being delivered from the hands of the enemy that she was delirious. Well, just as soon as they got their beloved twit back home, DJ and Erin were sure it would all come back to her like nothing had ever happened. DJ and Erin just smiled with amusement at Stephanie's predicament. It was then that Steph realized DJ and Erin were both missing three teeth apiece!
