...spiraling back to the preceding year…

She had just moved out of her parent's apartment. Life was good. She was independent, hard at work, and living on her own. She had waited for this day for a long time. Unfortunately, it was a short-lived adventure.

One fateful night, and her whole life had changed. Her parents had called, wanting her to sit for her brothers while they went out to eat. Being selfish that night, she had refused. It was only an hour later when news of a gas explosion at a local restaurant was broadcast. Josie knew in an instant it was her parent's favorite eatery. Relieved that she had refused to babysit, she rushed over to her parent's, only to hear from the neighbor that they had gone anyway, and taken the boys with them.

Panic stricken, Josie had rushed to the restaurant, frantic to learn of survivors, of which there were few. In the ensuing days, she had learned that the fire department had cited the restaurant on several occasions. One of these last citations involved a leaky gas valve. One leaky valve and it was all over, for her, for everyone she loved.

Ever since then, she had felt trapped. Trapped in her parent's apartment. Trapped in the hell that had become her life. Anger and hatred had reached mega-proportions over the course of a year. Anger with the fire department for not closing down the business. Anger with the police department for not pressing charges on the business owners. It didn't matter that the owners had been killed in the blast as well. She had wanted to go after the family. She thought it only fair that they lose everything as well.

The swelling anger within her soul took on a life of its own as it manifested itself in desire to hurt anyone as she had been hurt. It didn't matter who, as long they suffered. The fact that two firemen had been involved in this last incident was sheer luck.

Finally, release had come in the form of revenge. Oh yes indeed, revenge was sweet. Josie savored every last morsel of it's sweet enticing flavor. This was a moment she would cherish for the rest of her life.

Suddenly, she was aware that she was not alone in the room, as a voice from the present startled her out of her trance.

"Oh I'm sorry," the nurse apologized, "I didn't realize…" She was new to this floor and didn't recognize Josie, or even realized that this patient was receiving visitors.

"That's okay, I was leaving soon anyway," Josie informed the nurse. It was a lie, but she was still trying to get her bearings after her trip down memory lane.

The nurse began checking the machines when another one of those women-in-white joined her, checking the patient's vitals. They seemed to forget about the visitor in the room as they went about their business, chatting as they worked.

"I haven't heard how he is," the first nurse told the second.

"Well, I think it's a real shame. He's a fireman, you know. They almost coded him from what I heard, till Sue found a pulse on the guy."

"I know, isn't it something? Who in their right mind would purposely blow a place up?" The first nurse shook her head in disbelief.

Josie's head snapped around. Her eyes gleamed. Her mind was swimming. Coded? Pulse? Alive? But they said he was dead! She had called! She had even scoped things out for herself. She had boldly strolled through the unsuspecting mourners in the ER. What she had seen had satisfied her. A group of firemen, hospital personnel and one very distraught woman were bemoaning the fact that one of the firemen had died. Suddenly it dawned on her. She had been at Rampart Hospital! When all the time, that fireman was here, at UCLA! She fidgeted with her hands, waiting impatiently for the nurses to leave.

All her planning! All that work! And he was still alive! Josie needed time to think.

Once they were gone, she walked up to the bed and leaned over the pale form lying so deathly still. Lightly planting a kiss on his forehead, she whispered quietly…

"Bye, little brother, I'll see you tomorrow."

(Note from DiAnne ;) : Please, feel free, ANYONE, to jump in with Josie. Stephanie? I do not have an exclusive on her at this point, you know! Though, I do thank you for the opportunity to allow me to take her THIS far! Surely someone out there wants to 'play' with her…*G* And NO! Brenda, you have to leave your M-16 at HOME!)
