I believe that his deal with the devil was false. He could have gone anywhere to learn how to play guitar and it doesnt necceralily have to be that he sold his soul to the devil. To me it seems like a supersstitious story that was made up in the south.
Hoodo is folk magic and RJs story about how he sold his soul to the devil falls under the lines of hoodoo. The fact that the devil comes and physically meets someone at a crossroads late at night is difficult to believe which makes the entire story a hoodoo belief.
I believe that the story about tha crossroads is a metaphor because in the story RJ sells his soul to become great. When he returned he was an amazing guitar player and musician but his life was cut short when he died at a young age. Someone can look at that and say he died because the devil took his soul but it is more likely that his rockstar life style took a heavy toll on him. It is like once he got into the music industry he had sold his soul and was nothing more than a musician. ALso aspiring musicans would do anything to make it big and would even sell there soul to the devil to make it big.
I would wait at the crossroads for one night with Jessica Alba....that would be amazing.
