I dont believe that his deal was that with the devil at all. it said that he disappeared for one or two years and came back one of the greatest blues musicians and guitarists. this would lead one to believe that he was obviously practicing pretty hard in a two year span. i know that if i did nothing but play guitar for two yrs straight, i might develope some sort of talent. thats not to say that he didnt have talent to begin with. some people are born with that natural ability, and while supersticious people might call that hoodoo, i, personally, call that prodigy. now, perhaps i his mind he made a pact with the devil and perhaps that was just a metaphor for his sacrafice.

Hoodoo (voodoo) are ancient customs led by an Afrcan "witch" doctor and were practced in the deep south by slaves. they deal heavily in the workings of magic and things like posession. people believed that Johnsons knowledge of hoodoo allowed him to make a pact with the devil in order to become a better bluesplayer. when looking further into his lyrics, u c evidence to supprt that i.e. references to the devil, the crossroads, etc.

i dont think that it is an intentional metaphor, but when people look hard enough at evidence that isnt there they can draw out some pretty interseting conclusions. i do believe that after his death Johnsons apparent deal with the devil has now become an iconic symbol for the real life of rock stars. that sacrafice and giving up ur time or wealth or family or reputation or whatever, to do something that gives u fame and fortune could be constituted as greed and vanity ad therefore could be considered signing off ur soul.

love
