I think that Johnsons deal was faustian. The song mentions an evil spirit sun going down (which symolises the time when evil comes out and he died of poisoning). I think the devil possed the husband.
Hoodo is magic (and the devil worship and giving your soul to him) and Robert Johnson probebly used it to sell his soul.I think does not apply to most musicians because some musicians are born talented and they do not need to sacrifice thier soul.
I Would wait at the crossroads to bring back a friend or family member or a loved one.
