Beautiful, I am not

I was
getting ready to leave,
packing up my stuff,
when he walked in
and got in line.

He didn't look my way,
didn't seem to notice me,
so I shrugged it off
as nothing,
didn't bother me.

I don't know him well,
but we've talked
here and there,
and in a way, I guess,
he's just someone I know.

I was about
ready to leave,
with everything packed up,
when he walks by again,
heading outside.

Again, I shrugged it off,
it was really
no big deal,
I figured I could say hi
on my way out.

I threw my
empty glass away,
tossed my backpack
over my shoulder,
and headed for the door.

As I stepped outside,
I glanced at him,
sitting in a patio chair,
smoking a cigarette,
while sipping on his coffee.

"Hey," I said to him,
"How are you doing?"
He looked up at me,
blowing clouds of smoke
into the air.

"Oh," he said,
as if surprised to see me,
"I didn't see you in there,"
and then for a moment he paused,
as if to ponder my whereabouts.

"Yeah," I said, "I was there."
He smiled wildly, with a glint
of sunshine in his eyes,
"I was looking at all
the beautiful women." He remarked.

"Ah," I said quietly,
"I better get going,
it was nice to see you."
"You too," he replied.
"Take care," I said, walking away.

When I got into my car
I sat there for a moment,
"Well, what does that make me?
A part of the scenery?"
I thought out loud.

"Apparently," I said,
answering myself,
"I'm not beautiful
like all those other women,
I may as well be invisible."

It's no wonder why
no one notices me,
I'm simply a part
of the scenery,
beautiful, I am not.

I shook my head, driving away,
just once, I thought, just once,
I wish someone would notice me,
but that isn't going to happen,
not today, not tomorrow.

'Cause I just don't measure up
to everyone else,
for I am not,
nor will I ever be,
...beautiful.

*SQUEEZES*

Fair fae, the eyes of vanity cannot see those of mystic blood! They may look right at you all day long, but they are unable to ever actually SEE you. We often talk about people in sad situations who do not want to be pitied...but HE is just such a pity worthy individual.

Very well and maturally put, dear fae friend!!

Hello Janel

Strong tale told here with such a deftness of your pen, painting the scene with an honest clarity, yet, from a certain perspective. In that moment, it's all the perspective there is, and by god does it hurt, yet outside the moment, his is just one voice, lost in an ocean of voices that see far beyond a superficial shore.

Wonderfully captured with such an open heart.

Max
