Gateway to Hell

Here it is
his gateway to hell
and home

he is one of the forgotten...

a broken man
ghost-like
in his bitter skin
huddled
in the shadows
of neon

clutching
his only
worldly treasure
with trembling hands
in fingerless gloves

we�re careful as we step over him...
while
his whiskey breath
pries open
the chilly night
and he tries
to form
his aching words
between
shivers

he reads her so tenderly...

with bloodshot eyes
and cracked
stinging lips
his clothes, as dirty
and tattered
as his heart

and he relives a time
before death
a time before
existing
a time before
surviving
his one true love
before whiskey

and we glance back, one last time...

as we walk
down the stairs
to our jobs
and our homes
to our comfort

he weeps
as he reads her
in postcards from Paris

they�re all he has left...

this one was a picture challenge piece...
the picture was of the Gateway to the London Underground Railway
and I envisioned a homeless man sitting there, as I've described
in this poem...it pretty much just wrote itself...
or maybe I just got out of the way for a while, till it was done...he he
