2 Indianapolis Public Schools buildings to be demolished
Board says buildings would be impossible or too expensive to repair

The Indianapolis Public School Board voted Tuesday to demolish two 50-year-old schools it says it no longer can use and which would be expensive or impossible to repair.
Board members voted unanimously to allow the district to tear down School 64, 2710 Bethel Ave., and School 92, 6550 E. 42nd St. Those schools were among six the board previously voted to permanently shutter.

IPS will keep several other closed schools -- McFarland and Forest Manor middle schools and Schools 21, 37 and 68 -- for storage or to reopen if the trend of declining enrollment reverses.

District Facilities Chief Steve Young said the district has few options at the two schools the board voted to demolish. So far, he said, community members have not raised objections.
"We have told those communities in public meetings that this is going to happen," he said. "Both of those communities have had that discussion. They're aware of it, and it's been announced publicly we haven't yet gotten any response."
School 92 no longer has a functioning heating system, and the pipes that would have to be repaired are encased in the concrete floor. The building would have to be destroyed to fix it, Young said.
Both schools up for demolition were built in the 1950s, Young said, and don't have any distinguishing architectural features or particular historic value.
School Board President Mary E. Busch, who represents the area around School 92, said it always is a concern for a community when a longstanding school is closed and torn down.
But she said the problems at that school and the district's shrinking enrollment have made the decision more palatable for residents.
Superintendent Eugene White said although there has been little opposition, the community might not miss the school until the fall when residents realize children aren't on the sidewalks in the afternoon and the playgrounds are quiet.
"This won't hit them (until) September," he said.
The district still is working with historic preservationists to find another use for School 97, 1401 E. 10th St., which is listed on Historic Landmarks of Indiana's most endangered landmark list.
