CONSPIRACY NATION
PILOT EPISODE: "The Mystery of the 7 Cities"
"Conspiracy Nation" is a "Pseudo-documentary" or "mockumentary" television series similar to BET's "American Gangster" and VH1's "Behind the Music" documentaries. It will be produced as an authentic investigative report on different mysterious and controversial, "unsolved" crimes throughout America. In actuality, the show and it's content is pure fiction and will serve as a companion "prequel" to the feature film "7 Cities" written and directed by Christopher P. Abaya. "Conspiracy Nation" will set up the elaborate back story of the feature film and hopefully attract more investors and supporters for "7 Cities". This creative tool will also be used to generate an exciting buzz about the feature film. It will lay the foundation for the story, characters, and world in which they inhabit. The ultimate goal of the filmmakers is to submit the project to film festivals across the country. The tentative running time for "Conspiracy Nation" is 30 minutes.
"Conspiracy Nation: The Mystery of the 7 Cities" will be packaged with a companion soundtrack CD that will feature some of Hampton Roads hottest unsigned hip hop artists and groups.
THE STORY:
During the mid to late nineties, in the seven cities that make up Hampton Roads, Virginia, a musical revolution was brewing. At the epicenter of this revolution was Eric "DJ Hip Hop" Foster, a twenty-two year old Portsmouth native with a talent for Hip Hop production, recording and keeping crowds and parties jumping. He was well known and well respected throughout all of the seven cities. If you were into Hip Hop, you had heard of DJ Hip Hop. Like many of his peers, Eric was no stranger to trouble. He had his share of run-ins with rival crews and law enforcement, small-time drug dealing, smoking marijuana, robbery, etc. Overall however, Eric was harmless. His primary focus was his music.
Meanwhile, Detectives Timbre Gavin and Kenneth Reid, two officers fed up with inter-departmental corruption and greed, shared an antipathy for street kingpin "Big Nicky Diamonds". The two men, one Black (Kenneth) and one White (Timbre), were fully engrossed in a massive "Robin Hood-style" sweep of Nicky's businesses, properties and soldiers. With assets and front businesses in each of the seven cities, Big Nicky was one of the most ruthless and successful gangsters on the East Coast. But the rogue officers were not intimidated. Together, with full S.W.A.T. gear and artillery, and working outside of the law, they were swiftly forcing Big Nicky further and further out of power. But Big Nicky Diamonds would not go down without a bloody fight.
On the night of August 15, 1998, the fates of Eric Foster, Timbre Gavin, Kenneth Reid and Big Nicky Diamonds came crashing into one another with tragic consequences. Eric was set to dj at a large house party in Portsmouth. Across town, Detective Timbre Gavin was mysteriously meeting with his partner Detective Kenneth Reid to discuss one of their robberies that did not go as planned. The two broke into a multi-million dollar recording studio owned by Diamonds days before. Two engineers were shot during the robbery. One survived. It was the only time anyone was ever hurt in the plans of the two detectives. Afterwards, Timbre had possession of some of the recording studio equipment that was worth thousands of dollars. Oddly, he was with his four-year old son Timothy and this meeting was to take place at 1:00 am in a very dangerous part of the city. In another area, while djing, Eric was involved in a shooting. The incident left several party attendees injured, including a man who sustained a gunshot wound to the leg. That bullet was allegedly from a Glock M-17 9mm that Eric owned illegally. Unbeknownst to Eric, that same gun would later be matched as the firearm that killed Detective Timbre Gavin and his four-year old son Timothy that same evening. Detective Kenneth Reid would later confess to his involvement in the "Robin Hood Robberies" but that he was not to meet with Timbre Gavin that night. He was allegedly on duty during the killing of Det. Gavin and his son. To this day, Kenneth Reid is in protective custody. Days after the slaying of Det. Timbre and son Timothy Gavin, Eric Foster was wanted for their murders. To this day, he is still at large.
Was the murder of Detective Timbre Gavin and his son the work of the gangster, Big Nicky Diamonds? Or did the partnership between Timbre Gavin and Kenneth Reid become unstable and end violently? Or perhaps Eric Foster, in an act of desperation to own stolen recording equipment, did in fact kill the officer and his son. These questions make up "The Mystery of the 7 Cities".
KEY POINTS TO REMEMBER AND UTILIZE AS YOU ARE AUDITIONING
1. It's like playing pretend, or being a really good liar! Convince us that you know what you are talking about, like you know these people we ask you about. Make it all up. Just continue to go with it, no matter how it feels.
2. Be as authentic as you possibly can. We can fill in the technical particulars later. Just make it as real as you can for now.
3. There is plenty of room for interpretation. Go with your instincts. There are no rules, no right or wrong way to do it.
4. Use/play off what is known to be true in this case. Add you own flavor and point of view. Elaborate, elaborate, elaborate! Go as in depth as you can. No one word answers!
The story is a murder mystery, a "whodunit". There are a lot of questions surrounding what really happened. It is still a mystery to most people. There are many conspiracy theories surrounding this case, but everyone thinks they know the truth. Everyone has their own versions of what happened, some more accurate than others.
THE FACTS
1. 10 years ago, in the summer of 1998, a Portsmouth Detective was gunned down in his car around 1:30 am in a suspicious part of town. Even more suspicious, he had his 5-year-old son in the car with him. The boy was also killed.
2. This detective was involved in a major, illegal sting operation ("Robin Hood Robberies") that targeted a very dangerous crime lord named Big Nicky Diamonds.
3. This detective's partnership had begun to crumble due to the stress of their illegal operations.
4. A 23 year old, music producer/DJ was at a party a few blocks away from the crime scene. This young man was involved in a shooting at this party.
5. This young DJ owned an illegal firearm that was used to shoot a party attendee on the night the detective and his son were killed.
6. The same gun was used in both the shooting at the party and the murder of the detective and his 5-year-old son.
7. The young DJ was never seen again after that night.
8. In the years that passed, no one was ever arrested for the murders.
THESE CHARCTERS WILL BE INTERVIEWED ON CAMERA DISCUSSING THEIR RELATIONSHIP TO THE MAIN CHARCTERS OF THE STORY AS WELL AS THEIR THOUGHTS ON THE MYSTERY SURROUNDING THE HORRIBLE CRIME
Diane Foster – 50-something, Black female - a loving mother missing her son and fearing for his life. She doesn't believe one word of what they say about her son being a killer, and knows something strange went on the night her son was accused of killing a White detective and his 5 year old son. Her son is Eric Foster, and he has been missing for ten years. The two resided in Portsmouth, VA. His father/her husband left when Eric was very young.
Curtis Rose – early 30's, Black male – He's a good friend of Eric's. He knows Eric didn't kill anybody. He has a kind of "Me against the World" or "F the world" attitude/chip on his shoulder. Curtis is from Portsmouth, VA.
Tyson Walker – mid 30's, Black male – He's another friend of Eric's. An old school aspiring rap artist, calm, quiet demeanor, soft spoken, mature. He doesn't believe Eric killed those people.
Sherman Woods – 30's, Black male - Eric's cousin from New York. He has a typical NY Attitude/accent, very Hip Hop oriented. He's kind of a wild out type of character, more animated, and speaks with his hands.
Troy Woods – 50's, Black male - He is Eric's uncle from New York and Sherman's father. He also has a very strong New York attitude and accent.
Clay Cresswell – 40's to 50's, White male, Eric's former music teacher/mentor. He's an artsy type, free spirited, liberal, yet still a high school music/band teacher, well dressed and articulate.
Clifton Day – 40's, White male - Eric's former Probation officer, well dressed, articulate, believes Eric is innocent and felt he was an overall good kid.
James Trenton Wyse – 50's, Black male – He's an old school gangster type, zoot suit wearing, slick talking, attitude-having "business man". He is somewhat of a funny, but still very dangerous figure. He can be southern, maybe from North Carolina. He rolled with Big Nicky Diamonds back in the day. He believes Eric did it and kind of has a small chip on his shoulder towards Big Nicky Diamonds.
Freddie Salgado – 40's to 50's, White or other male - A very sharp and shrewd high end attorney, Big Nicky Diamonds former lawyer. Think rich and powerful, corrupt, cigar smoking lawyer, can talk his way out of anything. Knows the law and the loopholes. He loves and respects Big Nicky Diamonds and puts the blame on the cop/partner.
Jacobi Alvarez – 30's, Black male - A cool, down to earth thug, former sound engineer for Big Nicky Diamonds and Diamond House Records, think DAZ DILLINGER of Death row Records.
He doesn't have an opinion on who did the killings.
David Brown – 30's, Black male – He's another worker in Diamond house records. He really looked up to Eric and admired his sound engineering. He does not have an opinion on the killings.
Ray Long – 30's, Black male Portsmouth Police Officer. He sheds light on the notorious Big Nicky Diamonds from a street cop level. He believes Big Nicky had the detective and his young son killed.
George Sharp – 40's, White male – He's a Portsmouth Detective – He also talks in great lengths about Diamonds and the grip he had on the Hampton Roads area. He doesn't have an opinion on the killings.
James Shepard – 30's to 40's, White male - a police officer who talks in great lengths about the "Robin Hoods" of 1998. He looks up to them and feels they were doing the only right thing by taking down Big Nicky Diamonds by any means necessary. James is a good cop who hates criminality like Big Nicky Diamonds and his organization. He doesn't express an opinion on who committed the killings.
Agent Earl Goines – 40's to 50's, White male, Internal Affairs. He investigated the "Robin Hoods" of 1998. He does not agree with their methods and felt they deserved to be arrested just as well as Big Nicky Diamonds. Earl believes firmly in the law and feels no one, not even cops are above it. Think Tommy Lee Jones type of Character from The Fugitive. He doesn't express an opinion on who committed the killings.
Thomas Gavin – 19 year old, White male. He's a misguided youth, sad, and soft-spoken. He carries a hidden discontent and hatred for the murderers of his father and brother. He wants to one day become a cop like his dad, but he is somewhat of damaged goods. He believes Eric killed his father and his brother.
Jessica Gavin – White or other, mid-thirties female. She's Timbre's widow, still very weary after ten years. She misses her son and husband. She is incomplete and emotional, but not too over the top. She doesn't have an opinion on who killed her son and husband.
THESE ROLES WILL BE SHOWN IN STILL PICTURES AND HOME VIDEO FOOTAGE FROM THE PAST (70'S, 80'S, AND THE YEAR 1998)
Eric "DJ Hip Hop" Foster - 23 year old, Black male. He's a good kid in 1998. Heavily into Hip Hop music, recording, production and djing, he's very musically inclined, and somewhat streetwise, but not a head over heels thug.
Detective Timbre Gavin - Mid thirties, White male. He's a seasoned and decorated Portsmouth detective. Good guy, streetwise, tough cop. He's tried to bring law and justice to a city falling deeper and deeper into crime and violence. He decides to take the law into his own hands and become a vigilante along with his partner, Kenneth Reid in the year 1998. He was killed tragically along with his five-year-old son.
Timothy Gavin – 5-year-old, White male – He's the son of Timbre Gavin. He's just a cute, sweet kid.
Detective Kenneth Reid - Mid thirties, Black male. He is also a tough streetwise detective. A single man, Kenneth became fed up with the crime and corruption in his city and became a vigilante with his partner, Timbre 1n 1998.
Big Nicky Diamonds – 40's, Black male. This is a seriously dangerous figure. Large in stature, he was a shrewd and sharp businessman and criminal kingpin throughout the 90's. Think Suge Knight of Death row Records.
Frank Foster – 40's, Black male, Eric's father. A musical man, bass was his instrument, old school player from the seventies. He was an overall good man.
